5 Best European AI Assistants (2026): ChatGPT Alternatives, GDPR-Checked

Five European alternatives to ChatGPT, ranked from our verified dataset: Proton Lumo for private everyday chat, Euria by Infomaniak for the cleanest Swiss chain, Mistral's Vibe for the strongest European model, Privatemode for confidential work, and DeepL for translation and writing. For each one we checked who operates it, where the models run, which clouds sit underneath and what that means for CLOUD Act exposure.

A European model is not the same as a European chain

Most ChatGPT-alternative lists compare model quality and price. This one starts with the questions a privacy or procurement review asks: who operates the assistant, in which jurisdiction, on whose servers, and what happens to your prompts. They matter more for AI than for most software, because a chat window is where people paste contracts, customer emails and health questions. Checking the five strongest European options in October 2026 produced one finding worth knowing before you choose: the best-known European assistant runs partly on US-owned clouds, while the cleanest chains belong to smaller Swiss and German providers.

1. Proton Lumo: best for private everyday chat

Lumo is the assistant from Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. Prompts are encrypted to a key held only by the model servers, answers are generated in memory without logs, and saved chats are stored with zero-access encryption that Proton itself cannot read. It runs open-weight models, including the Swiss Apertus, on Proton-operated hardware in Germany, and the terms rule out using your chats to improve the service. There is a free plan, and Lumo Plus costs €9.99 a month billed annually. One caveat applies (CLOUD Act exposure: Minor): all of Proton's traffic reaches the internet through Cloudflare's network, which carries only encrypted data. No API, so it suits people rather than developers. Full profile

2. Euria by Infomaniak: best fully European chain, and free

Euria is the free assistant from Infomaniak, the Geneva company listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange since October 2026 and still controlled by its foundation. Inference runs on open-weight models in Infomaniak's own Swiss data centres, on hardware it owns, and the vendor states that prompts are not used for training. That gives it the cleanest record in this list (CLOUD Act exposure: None). Euria handles web search, document analysis and transcription, and the same models are available through an OpenAI-compatible API billed per use in Swiss francs. The trade-off is model capability: open-weight models rather than a frontier lab's flagship. One open question: the provider behind Euria's web search is not disclosed. Full profile

3. Mistral Vibe: the strongest European model, on a mixed chain

Mistral AI in Paris is Europe's leading frontier model lab, and its assistant, renamed from Le Chat to Vibe in May 2026, is the closest European match for ChatGPT in capability, with chat, task delegation and coding modes. There is a free plan, and Pro costs €14.99 a month. The chain is the catch. Mistral's published sub-processors put inference on Microsoft and Google cloud regions in Europe and on CoreWeave, next to its own French compute, and US investors hold material stakes (ownership: EU HQ, US-funded; CLOUD Act exposure: Material). For a fully European path, run Mistral's Apache-licensed open-weight models on EU GPU infrastructure instead of the managed service. Full profile

4. Privatemode: best for confidential work and developers

Privatemode comes from Edgeless Systems in Bochum, a confidential-computing specialist controlled by its founders (ownership recorded as EU-owned). Before a prompt leaves your device, the app verifies a hardware attestation of the server, and processing happens inside memory-encrypted machines with NVIDIA GPUs at Scaleway (France) and Lyceum (Berlin), so the operator cannot read your prompts and does not store them. It offers a browser chat and an OpenAI-compatible API with open-weight models such as GLM and gpt-oss, priced per token from €0.20 per million input tokens, with a free allowance. CLOUD Act exposure: Minor. The content path is European, but sign-in, the account portal, billing and the delivery of the web app use US services that the DPA does not list. Full profile

5. DeepL: best for translation and writing

DeepL from Cologne is not a general chatbot, but for translation and editing it is the European tool most people already use, with Translator, Write, real-time Voice translation and a newer task agent. DeepL holds ISO 27001, BSI C5 and SOC 2, and paid plans start at €7.49 a month billed annually, with texts deleted after processing. Two things changed in 2026: content from business customers is now processed on Amazon Web Services by default, potentially outside the EU unless you buy the Data Residency add-on, and US venture investors are prominent on the cap table (CLOUD Act exposure: Material). On the free translator, texts may be used for training. Full profile

How to choose between them

Decide what the assistant will see, then pick the chain to match. Everyday private chat: Proton Lumo if you want stored chats only you can decrypt, or Euria if you want the cleanest European chain at no cost. Maximum capability from a European lab: Mistral's Vibe, accepting that the managed service runs partly on US clouds, or Mistral's open-weight models self-hosted on EU infrastructure if you can run them. Confidential documents or an API for your own tools: Privatemode, whose hardware attestation lets you verify the setup rather than trust a promise. Translation and editing: DeepL, on a paid plan, with the Data Residency add-on if EU-only processing is a requirement.

Whatever you choose, check two settings before pasting anything sensitive: whether chats are used for training, and how long they are kept. Every profile links the vendor's own documents, so you can verify the chain yourself instead of relying on a "European" label.

Frequently asked questions

What is the European equivalent of ChatGPT?
The best-known one is Mistral AI's assistant from Paris, called Vibe since May 2026 (it was previously Le Chat). It runs Mistral's own models and has a free plan and a Pro plan. If your reason for looking is privacy rather than model brand, Proton Lumo (Swiss operator, chats stored with zero-access encryption) and Euria by Infomaniak (Swiss, inference on Infomaniak's own Swiss data centres, free) are the closer fit, because Mistral's managed service runs partly on US-owned clouds.
Which AI assistants actually come from Europe?
Among chat assistants: Mistral's Vibe (France), Proton Lumo (Switzerland), Euria by Infomaniak (Switzerland) and Privatemode (Germany). DeepL (Germany) covers translation and writing rather than open-ended chat. Behind them sit European model and infrastructure companies such as Aleph Alpha and Black Forest Labs (Germany) and LightOn (France), which sell mainly to businesses. Our sovereign AI category lists all of them with their ownership and hosting checks.
Is there a free European AI assistant?
Yes. Euria by Infomaniak is free to use, Proton Lumo and Mistral's Vibe both have free plans with daily limits, and Privatemode gives new users 5 million tokens plus 1 million a month without a card. DeepL's free translator is also free, but texts entered there may be used to train DeepL's models, so keep personal or confidential content for the paid plans, where texts are deleted after processing.
Do European AI assistants train on my chats?
It depends on the service, not on the continent. Proton's Lumo terms say chat content is not used to improve the service, Infomaniak states that Euria prompts are not used for training, and Privatemode processes prompts in encrypted memory without storing them. DeepL does not train on texts from paid plans but may use texts from its free translator and free Write. For any assistant, check the training setting in your account before pasting anything sensitive.
If an AI company is European, is my data out of reach of the US CLOUD Act?
Not automatically. The CLOUD Act reaches US companies and the data they control, so what matters is who operates the service and whose infrastructure processes your prompts. A European company that runs inference on Microsoft, Google, Amazon or CoreWeave servers, even in EU regions, still has US-owned providers in the core of its chain. That is why our CLOUD Act ratings read: Mistral, Material; DeepL, Material; Euria, which runs on Infomaniak's own Swiss hardware, None. This is a reading of corporate and infrastructure structure from public documents, not a claim about any data request.
How was this list verified?
Each entry was checked against the vendor's published DPA, sub-processor list, privacy policy, imprint and register filings, plus technical checks of where the service answers from, then dated on its profile and scheduled for a quarterly re-check. The ranking is editorial and never sponsored; where we earn an affiliate commission, the page says so.

Methodology

For every product we read the public DPA, sub-processors document, hosting region declaration, and corporate ownership records. Each is timestamped. Signals are editorial, re-verified quarterly. We never accept self-attestation.
