US-incorporated customer service platform, taken private by Hellman & Friedman + Permira in 2022.
Crisp (France, Nantes, EU-owned, French-hosted, fully bootstrapped with no VC or US parent) is the strongest European alternative to Zendesk on EU Vetted's editorial assessment. Userlike (Germany, Cologne, EU-owned via Swedish-listed Lime Technologies, German engineering) is the strongest DACH option, and LiveChat / Text (Poland, Wrocław, EU-owned, Warsaw-listed since 2014) is the most established full-suite product. One honest caveat for the category: every AI-era support tool here carries a minor US dependency through LLM APIs for its AI features, so none is fully CLOUD-Act-free, but Crisp, Userlike and LiveChat are EU-owned and EU-hosted, with that exposure limited to the optional AI layer. Zendesk, Inc. is US-incorporated (owned by Hellman & Friedman + Permira) and carries direct CLOUD Act exposure.

US-incorporated customer service platform, taken private by Hellman & Friedman + Permira in 2022.
Zendesk is the default customer-support suite for a generation of teams: ticketing, live chat, knowledge base, and a deep CX platform. It is also US-incorporated (Zendesk, Inc., taken private in 2022 by the US private-equity firms Hellman & Friedman and Permira), which means every customer conversation it stores sits with a US-controlled company. For a European support team writing a Schrems II transfer impact assessment, or any organisation that wants its customer-conversation data under EU control, the ownership profile is what prompts the search for an alternative.
This page checks the six European customer-support and live-chat alternatives against Zendesk on the facts we treat as load-bearing: where the data sits and how it's hosted, where the AI features route their data, and, last on the list because it says the least on its own, who legally owns the company. We are honest about a category reality: the AI features in modern support tools generally call a US LLM API, so even the cleanest EU vendors here carry a minor US dependency at the AI layer. Their core platforms and customer data, however, are EU-owned and EU-hosted, and every row is sourced to the vendor's public information.
Crisp has the cleanest ownership story in the category: a fully bootstrapped French company with no VC or parent (France, Nantes, EU-owned, EU-hosted). Userlike is the strongest DACH option, with German engineering and a Swedish-listed parent (Germany, Cologne, EU-owned), and LiveChat / Text is the most established full-suite product, listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since 2014 (Poland, Wrocław, EU-owned).
Most of the daily habits a support team builds up around Zendesk, the shared inbox, the routing rules, the canned responses, carry over cleanly to a European alternative:
Where the ceiling is lower:
Moving ticket history, macros and agent seats off Zendesk breaks down into six manageable steps.
Here's how the six shortlist by the constraint that matters most to you:
For every product we read the public DPA, sub-processors document, hosting region declaration, and corporate ownership records. Each is timestamped. Signals are editorial, re-verified quarterly. We never accept self-attestation.
