SaaS made in Germany

In short

Germany has one of Europe's deepest benches of independent SaaS: Hetzner, IONOS and STACKIT in cloud infrastructure; Nextcloud, luckycloud and STRATO HiDrive in storage; Tuta, Mailbox.org and Posteo in private email; and Lexware in accounting. These are all companies headquartered in Germany, but origin is only one signal — ownership, hosting region and CLOUD Act exposure are recorded separately on each listing, because a German company can still route data through a US sub-processor.

Frequently asked questions

Are German SaaS companies automatically hosted in Germany?
No — company origin and hosting region are independent signals, which is why we record them separately. Many German vendors do host domestically: Hetzner hosts in Germany, for example. But a German-headquartered company can still place data with a non-German or US sub-processor, so check the hosting region and sub-processor list on each listing rather than inferring it from the company's location.
Does a German company mean no US CLOUD Act exposure?
Not by itself. CLOUD Act reach follows corporate control and the sub-processor chain, not just where the head office sits. A German-incorporated, German-controlled vendor with no US services in the data path has a structurally weaker exposure profile — Hetzner is recorded as CLOUD Act exposure: None — whereas a German firm with US ownership or a US CDN in the path can remain exposed. Each listing shows the CLOUD Act exposure we assessed.
Which categories have the strongest German options?
Cloud and hosting (Hetzner, IONOS, STACKIT), file storage (Nextcloud, luckycloud, STRATO HiDrive, Filen), private email (Tuta, Mailbox.org, Posteo), email marketing (CleverReach, rapidmail, Inxmail), and accounting (Lexware, sevdesk) are all well represented. Hetzner infrastructure starts from €4/month, which makes it a common reference point for German-hosted compute.
